ずっと読もう読もう思っていたDivergentシリーズの原作をようやく読み始め、面白いなと思った表現がたくさんあったので、各章ごとにまとめてみたくなりました。

第２章の要約
- ベアトリス、派閥選択儀式のための適性検査待ち。緊張気味。
- 自分の番になり、装置や検査薬で催眠状態になり、適性検査が始まる
- 目を覚ますと検査の部屋とは別の空間にいて、いくつかシーンが変わりながら検査が進む

「inch」は長さの単位でしか知らなかったので、動詞として「少しずつ近づく」という意味があるというのが新鮮でした。1inchは親指の幅くらいの長さ、2.5cmくらいなので、ほんとに少しずつ近づくイメージですね。
面白いと思った表現

- 「wrench」は工具のレンチと同じ。動詞だと「ひねる、ねじる、〜をねじる」などの意味になり、胃がよじれる様子もこれで表せるんですね。
- 顔が青白いことを「You look pale.」などと言いますが、「pale」だけじゃなくて「plaster（石膏）」が頭につくと、ほんとに白い様子が想像できます。
- 頭に結った髪の毛のことを「wear（着る）」と表現できることを初めて知りました。確かに、髪型って服を着るように頭に付けているようなものですね。
- 極度の緊張状態のときに日本語でもよく「心臓が口から飛び出しそう」と言いますが、「migrate（移住する）」を使って心臓が別の部位に移動しているような表現が面白いなと思いました。
- 「streak」は縞模様を作る、という意味があり、「be streaked with gray」で白髪が混ざっている様子を表現できるそうです。
- 「goose bumps」は「鳥肌が立つ」と言うときにネイティブが使っているのをよく聞きます。「goose（ガチョウ）」の肌表面にある「bumps（ぼこぼこ）」に似ていることが由来（Wikipediaより）。
その他感想
食堂のシーンから分かる酷なDivergent社会
適性検査の前、学校？の食堂（cafeteria）で皆待っているのですが、各派閥によってテーブルが別れており、着ている物、待っている間の行動などもその派閥がくっきり分かるようになっています。
アメリカのドラマや映画で、高校や大学の食堂が映るシーンに似ている気がしますが、Divergentはもう少し酷な部分があります。
普通の高校や大学の食堂では、やんちゃで目立つリーダー格の男子グループ、おしゃれできれいな女子生徒、物静かな子、からかわれる標的になってしまう子などがいるわいわいしているシーンをよく見ますが、それは個々の好みや性格、自由な選択によるものです。Divergentの場合は個々が好きなように振る舞えるのでは無く、生まれた家族の派閥によって自分がどんな行動をして良いのかが制限されています。（派閥をどうしても変えたければ、16歳の派閥選択の儀式で変更します）
なので、このシーンに出てくる食堂ではまず最初に派閥ごとのカラーでくっきりとわかれていて、自分の行動を好きに選べない不自由さが描かれています。
ケイレブの適性検査前後の様子
ケイレブ（ベアトリスの同い年の兄）は自分の適性検査の番で名前が呼ばれると、自信満々に検査の部屋に向いましたが（"He moves confidently toward the exit."）が、10分後に帰ってきた時は石膏のように顔面蒼白状態でした（"He is plaster-pale."）。（※カッコ内の英文はいずれもDivergent第2章より引用）
最初に読んだ時は、適性検査の内容がそれほど恐ろしい物だったのかなくらいにしか思っていなかったのですが、もしかしたら、このときに分かった自分の適性が後日ケイレブの選ぶことになる今とは別の派閥だったのかもしれません。
もともと自分の中ではその派閥を選ぶことを決めていたんだろうけど、それが尚更固まって、自分の選択や未来が現実味を帯び、その選択が引き起こす結果や家族とのことなどを考えての顔面蒼白なのかもしれないと思いました。
